Non-Religious Premarital Counseling

Los Angeles

Ready to take the next step in your relationship and looking for secular premarital counseling? Today premarital counseling has become a more widespread form a couples therapy among marriage & family therapists, and can be a wonderful way to deepen and strengthen your relationship before heading into the next stage outside of a religious context.

Perhaps you’ve recently gotten engaged, are thinking about getting engaged, or have even just tied the knot. While the transition can be filled with joy and excitement about the new level of commitment to your partner and a shared future, you also might be finding that the next step also suddenly brings up - well - a lot.

Issues related to bringing each of your families together, different approaches to finances, and planning for a family and the future can all become more significant and are important to openly address. This time in your lives also provides a unique opportunity to set a strong foundation in terms of how you communicate, work through conflict, and more deeply connect, and premarital counseling can help you both learn tools that will carry you and your relationship through years to come.

FAQ

Can we do premarital counseling if we’re not religious?

Yes, I offer premarital counseling that is secular and based specifically on the science and literature around couples therapy and relationship best practices. Many marriage & family therapists have expanded offerings in this area today. While I welcome clients of all spiritual and non-spiritual backgrounds, couples who want a an approach specific to their religion can still work with religious leaders such as pastors and other officiants to provide a more spiritual focus.

Do you offer packages based around a set number of premarital sessions?

I typically find that working without a set structure allows much more flexibility to tailor each couple’s work to their specific needs. Instead of offering a “one-size-fits-all” plan, we’ll use our first session to identify the areas you want to work on most together and go from there. While most couples choose to start therapy on a more open-ended basis, I am also always happy to define a set number of sessions in order to work with a particular budget or facilitate the ability to offer sessions as a gift (see below).

Can I gift premarital counseling sessions to a couple?

Yes, premarital therapy sessions can be a wonderful and impactful wedding or engagement gift for the couple in your life. Please contact me directly to discuss options for gifting and paying for sessions for another couple.
